Abbots Residents Bite Back at Dogs

ImageFollowing the report in My Abbots on Akita Dogs at the end of last year we have had an interesting response from a number of residents concerning the Japanese fighter dogs. For those who did not see our piece, My Abbots received a complaint from a local resident, who was out walking her dog one morning, after she witnessed the brutal attack of her English Springer Spaniel by three white dogs, confirmed as Akita Dogs.
There had been reports of the same dogs attacking other pets around the area, and even one incident which saw a resident attacked. Following this article, we have received a number of letters from Abbots residents concerned about the dogs which seem to be well known around the area. It appears that the dogs are owned by a resident from Kings Langley. One resident wrote and told us that people had moved away because of the constant barking of the dogs, while others had been quite scared to walk their dogs at risk of being attacked. A resident from Pimlico said that he had been attacked by some Akita Dogs near his home. He said: “I don't know anyone that owns three of them, but my next door neighbour owns two and they attacked me & my Springer Spaniel puppy in September. I was bitten by one as I saved my pup from the other. I had to go to hospital, but luckily my pup was ok.” Debbie Parsons, who is a Trustee for the Japanese Akita Welfare Trust, believes that the events which have taken place in Abbots are extraordinary. She told My Abbots: “The Akita is not on the dangerous dog register for a reason, they are not dangerous. Yes they are fighter dogs, but if they are kept on a lead, then they are no danger to anyone.” The problem is, however, that these dogs do not seem to be on a lead when they have attacked. Another resident told us: “These dogs were in my garden once for about four hours, one of them was in season. I have an Alsatian and I was too afraid to take him out for his evening walk. I rang the police but they didn't respond.” New Sergeant at Abbots Langley Police, Neil Canning, has told residents that they should contact Three River District Council on 01923 776611 if they see the Akita dogs, or contact police directly if they are bitten on 0845 3300 222. Three Rivers District Council are still investigating the Akita Dogs and My Abbots will bring you their findings once we have them.
