Jade Hales is a name, much like Pete Nash, that Abbots residents will know by now. The teenager was lucky to survive a near fatal car crash in November last year which left her in intensive care and her life hanging by a thread. But the battling Pro Cut hairdresser, who lives in Bedmond, defied the odds and has made a remarkable recovery.
She is by no means 100% and still has to do a number of exercises on an exercise ball to improve her balance and strengthen her pelvis, but her positive attitude and willingness to get better has even seen her return to work on a part-time basis recently. The Bedmond girl recently celebrated her 18th birthday at the village hall and was overwhelmed by the number of people who attended. She told My Abbots: “There were people there that I didn’t even know that had been invited by my Mum and my Nan. Even the doctors who looked after me came which was really nice because I didn’t know some of them due to being in a coma.” As most 18-year-olds are, Jade was showered with gifts on her birthday, which ranged from jewellery to her exercise ball from the physios at the hospital. The thing she would have loved most, though, would have been to ride her horse, Murray, but this is sadly a long way off for the brave teenager. Jade and her family used the occasion at the village hall to also do some fundraising for the charity BASICS (The British Association for Immediate Care), for which Doctor David Gaunt is a part of. David was one of the first to the scene of Jade’s accident and played a huge role in keeping the 18-year-old alive. He was also present at her birthday party and was pleased to see that she was doing so well. He told My Abbots: “It was very emotional seeing Jade as it was the first time I had seen her where she wasn’t in a hospital bed. I was amazed to see her dancing around in six inch heels and seeing her again was very moving. The day of her party was actually my birthday, so it was like a double celebration.” The evening raised £450 for BASICS and Jade wished to thank all those who donated prizes. She would also like to thank the Ball family for doing the catering and David Gaunt and his family for attending the evening.
