An Abbots Langley resident convicted of shop lifting, criminal damage and driving without a license or insurance, has avoided being sent to jail.
The 29-year-old, of South Way, got away with £150 worth of goods from the Co Op in New Road, Croxley Green, on November 29 and was found to be driving a van in January just days after he damaged a window in Rickmansworth. At Dacorum Magistrates Court last month, prosecutor Richard Yap said that the Abbots man, who has a number of previous convictions, entered the Co Op store, grabbed a trolley and filled it with goods before walking out with no intention of paying. He then got into his car and drove off. Patrick O’Reilly, defending, said that despite his client having been put in front of court a number of times, he was trying to deal with the difficulties of his formative years – which include past substance abuse. Chairman of the bench, Mr Craigan, went along with probation's recommendation in their report and imposed an 18-month community order, which will include a basic skills course, running for 10 days. The 29-year-old was also given six points for his motoring offences and also saw nearly £400 of his benefits deducted. |
