A local student has missed out on winning Miss Hertfordshire 2008 which would have seen her go through and compete for Miss England. Katrina Warmes, 21, of Eastlea Avenue, was one of 30 finalists at the event held on May 11 at the Tewin Bury Farm Hotel in Welwyn.
The Bristol University student had made it past the first round which saw girls from all over the county send in their applications and photographs to try and make it through to the final 30. Katrina, who admits that she only entered for a laugh, made it through to the final and came up against fellow talented and beautiful women. On the day of the final, Katrina admits that she didn’t spend too long getting ready, putting on “some makeup” and picking out her dress. As part of the final, Katrina had to catwalk in two different dresses – one which was eco friendly, and the other being evening formal wear. “I bought my eco friendly dress from a charity shop and based my choice on the theme of recycling,” she said. “I had chosen my evening wear days before the event and felt really good about it.” The 30 finalists were also invited to send in videos of themselves before the May 11 event, showing off a particular talent. Three of the girls were chosen to perform in the talent round, and Katrina was one of them. “I somehow managed to get away with not sending in a video,” she said. “I did a recital of Shakespeare, which was my parents’ idea, while another girl played the violin.” Sadly, Katrina did not win, but told My Abbots that she had a fantastic day and was grateful for the support she received from her parents and boyfriend Matt. As for next year, Katrina has not yet decided whether she will enter the competition, but she does admit that the recent experience has increased her appetite to do some modelling. She said: “I didn’t expect to win as some of the girls in the final were part of modelling agencies. It’s something I’d think about if the opportunity came about.”
