Pete in his hospital bed Residents of Abbots are all familiar with the name Pete Nash by now. Pete has been in and out of hospital for two months now as doctors seek to save his life. As reported a couple of months ago, Pete’s first operation was due to take place at the beginning of December, at The Frenchay Hospital in Bristol.
The surgery, carried out by Consultant Neuroradiologist Dr Shelley Renounden, focused on sealing some of the large blood vessels in Pete’s brain. While the surgery went well, Pete had a number of seizures and will now require a further three embolisations (operations). The fourth operation was due to take place at the beginning of this month and sought to prepare the AVM for removal. It is hoped that this operation will lead to the final piece of surgery, which will involve the removal of the AVM from Pete’s brain. The major operation will be carried out by Mr David Porter. One more embolisation may be required before the final op, but hopefully there is a light starting to appear at the end of a long dark tunnel for the Nash family. Pete with his surgeon,Mr David Porter Pete’s wife Julia told My Abbots: “Pete is not out of the woods and is still prone to haemorrhaging, but hopefully within the next month the operations will all be concluded and Pete will be in rehab on the way to recovery.” Due to the surgery that Pete has required, the money that the family worked so hard to raise will not stretch as far as they had hoped. Pete and Julia were dealt a massive blow when they learnt that their appeal to the local PCT for funding had been rejected. Astonishingly, they found out the bad news through reading an article in the Daily Mirror. A legal team is currently looking into how the confidential information was leaked. To help raise more funds, Lewis Nash,17, is doing a music rock challenge through Kings Langley School and is raising funds for his dad with the help of many other students. Local football club Evergreen FC are hosting a snail race in the coming weeks with money being raised going towards Pete’s Fund. If you wish to donate to Pete’s cause, please make cheques payable to ‘Pete’s Fund’ and send to My Abbots magazine. Or, you can donate online at www.petesfund.co.uk. |
