A local Wedding Planner is still wondering how she did not suffer life threatening injuries after being hit head on by a drunk driver. Debbie Diggle, of Whitley Close, Abbots Langley, was driving along Courtland’s Drive, Watford, in her Toyota Rav-4 at 10pm on Friday July 25, when a white Transit Van swerved in front of her at speed.
Debbie, realising the danger, swerved to the left to try and avoid the oncoming driver, but the van was simply going too fast, and crashed straight into Debbie’s vehicle. Thankfully, Debbie was able to walk away from the accident, but was taken away by ambulance to Watford General Hospital suffering from whiplash, bruising and a bloody nose. She told My Abbots News : “I still remember the incident as though it were still happening. I just remember the van hitting me and the airbag bursting out, and then there was just a lot of blood everywhere.” Debbie was discharged from hospital a few hours later, as was the driver of the Transit Van, who was led away by police. He has been charged with drink driving, and after another driver was almost hit and witnessed the whole event, the drunk driver could also be charged with dangerous driving. As a result of the accident, wedding planner Debbie, who runs her own business – Wedding Wonders, has had to cancel appointments with potential clients and will miss work for a few weeks. She is also a tutor at the Institute for Professional Wedding Planners, but is currently unable to attend due to her injuries. Police and ambulance workers told Debbie that if she had been driving anything smaller than her 4x4 Toyota, she may have not walked away from the collision at all. She added: “I just cannot believe some drivers are stupid enough to put other people’s lives at risk. What would this man have felt like if I hadn’t walked away from the crash?” Both Debbie’s Toyota and the Transit Van were a write off, which highlights how bad the impact was.
