Richard Ansell An independent betting firm which has been providing its service since 1970 in Abbots has challenged the introduction of a rival bookmaker. Betting giant William Hill was last month granted permission to move to a premises within the village, which has upset High Street Bookmaker Ansells, which has a long family tradition within Abbots. The barrister representing William Hill told Magistrates present at the application process, which took place at Hemel Hempstead Court, that the betting firm was hoping to overcome what it perceived as a ‘monopoly situation’ within the village. Their aim was to provide a bigger shop with modern facilities for locals.
Richard Ansell, who is a partner in Ansells, stated his firm was not a monopoly and acted independently, offering an accurate and up to date betting service. Richard told My Abbots: “We were disappointed with the result in Abbots Langley. We gave evidence that the volume of betting taking place in the village was almost 50% less than William Hill's estimate. The problem now is that there will be two non viable shops in the village centre. Unfortunately viability is not an issue that the committee has to consider.” The barrister representing Ansells at the applications process, told magistrates that William Hill would not be bringing anything to the village which Ansells didn’t already provide. A petition with over 600 signatures opposed Hill’s plans to change the use of the building on Langley Parade, from retail to betting last year. Three River District Council did initially reject Hill’s application for the change, but the bookie was successful in overturning their decision on appeal. Richard added: “We have never taken any advantage of our position as our exceptional terms of business and first class facilities are available in the Village as well as in our Watford shops. This is unlike William Hill who only ‘up’ their normal basic terms when in direct competition with us.” Several people have voiced their concerns over parking, opening times and how the new shop is going to affect those who live within close proximity of the premises.
