A road rage incident which saw a man whip a cardigan in the face of an Abbots female driver has seen him fined over £600. Elmo Alfred, from Surrey, was brought before Watford Magistrates’ Court last month for the incident which took place outside an internet café in Whippendell Road, Watford
Abbots resident, Mandy Thompson, had stopped outside the establishment in her Transit Van, leaving the hazard lights on, while she went inside and bought a mobile phone top up card. She told the court that once she returned to the van and was sat in the driver’s seat, she heard a car sounding its horn behind her. She open and closed her hand to indicate that her hazards were on, and signalled that the driver should simply drive past her. The Abbots resident denied sticking her middle finger up at Alfred, although she did admit that her signal to instruct him to drive past could have been misinterpreted. She also denied accusations from Hannah Jameel, defending, that she had in fact made the attack up. Ms Thompson told the court how Alfred’s car pulled up beside her, at which point he leant out of the passengers side window, used offensive language towards her, and whipped her in the face with a white cardigan. Ms Thompson said that an officer had seen her injury after the zip of the cardigan had caught her in the face. She claimed she had no other reason to bring Alfred to court. Ms Jameel claimed Ms Thompson’s account of the event was ‘absurd’, and that if Alfred has leant out of the vehicle in the way she described, it is likely he would have fallen out. After both sides had pleaded their case, the court found Alfred guilty and he was ordered to pay £100 compensation to Miss Thompson. He was also ordered to pay £565 in fines and costs.
