RICH IN CHARITY AMBITION
ImageHunton Bridge resident, Richard Stuart, 32, cycled almost 350 miles for charity after completing the annual London to Paris bike ride.
Richard completed the course in just over three days following two years worth of training leading up to the event.
He began his training back in 2007, starting with short one mile cycles in his area.
By the time the challenge arrived, Richard had completed a 100 mile roundtrip to Oxford.
Richard, a Recruitment Manager based in Welwyn Garden City, told My Abbots News that he initially wanted to complete the challenge “to get fit”, but after his grandfather passed away at Christmas, suffering from Alzheimers, he felt now was a good time to raise money for a worthy charity.
He said: “I lost five stone during the training and found it really tough, but it was all worthwhile and meant I was well prepared for the Paris cycle.”
Richard along with more than 100 other cyclists set off from Croydon on Wednesday, June 3, and cycled to Dover on the first day.
He said: “I cycled with five others who were of a similar standard to me, and we had a lunch stop halfway through the day for everyone to meet up.
“I didn’t know anyone before I started the event, but you get chatting and find people to tag along with.”
It wasn’t all plain sailing for Richard, however, as on the second day of the event he broke his glasses while pumping up his tyres.
He said: “The guys I was cycling with had to tell me what way we were turning and when because I couldn’t see the markers.
“The one time I forgot my second pair was the one time I could really have done with them.”
