Six local teachers fulfilled their pupils’ biggest wishes on November 22 when they were put behind bars at Rickmansworth Police Station, raising nearly £2,200 in the process. Teachers were led to their cells at midday as part of the Peace Hospice's latest fundraising event.
School children raised as much sponsorship as possible and the school that raised the most money ensured that their teacher was locked away until 8pm that evening with the remaining teachers being released at 5pm. The school which had the privilege of locking their teacher away for the longest period was The Russell School, Chorleywood, with their teacher, Mr David Peel, having to stay locked up after his fellow educators had been released. Three Rivers District Council Chairman, Chris Lloyd, was present at the fundraiser to ‘slam’ the cells shut, while pupils from the schools involved visited the teachers in the police station. Describing the event as a “great success”, The Hospice's Community Fundraiser, Emma Watson said: “The teachers were really good sports and despite suffering a little from the cold cells, didn’t complain and raised a lot of money. This event has really captured the imagination of everyone involved but our primary aim is to raise awareness to children about the work of the Hospice and to hopefully raise as much money as possible. I would like to thank all the teachers and the Rickmansworth Police Station for helping us run this event.” Phillip Gibbs, Headmaster at Divine Saviour RC Primary School, told My Abbots News that he was quite apprehensive about the event before hand as he was unaware of what to expect. He said: “We had our fingerprints taken, which I didn’t know was going to happen, and then we were put in our cells, alone. They were very cold, but it was for a worthy cause and the children got very excited about it, so it was all worthwhile.
