ABBOTS CRICKET CLUB SQUARE UP IN BEDMOND
ImageAbbots Langley Cricket Club is looking to add to its facilities after seeking user rights to the cricket square at Toms Lane recreation ground. At a full meeting of Abbots Langley’s Parish Council earlier this month, the matter was discussed between members as to whether the popular cricket club should be given the user rights for 10 years, exclusively.
Councillor for Bedmond and Pimlico, Geoff Emery, was pleased that Abbots CC were looking to use the square and invest in the area, but was concerned by the term ‘exclusive rights’, just in case a team from Bedmond wished to use the facility. He said: “I’m delighted Abbots Cricket Club can use the resurrected square on Toms Lane, but my only concern is that my understanding is this will be exclusive use, and there may be a team from Bedmond that wishes to use it in the future.” Councillor Leon Lay, who has been heavily involved in the club for many years, understood Councillor Emery’s concerns, but wished to point out that the club is investing a large sum of money into the project. He said: “I should point out that Abbots CC has invested £1,000 into what is left of the ground as it hasn’t been played on for years. The overall investment we are looking at will total about £5,000.” Councillor Keith Williams agreed that the cricket club should be given exclusive rights to the ground because of the money they are investing. He said: “Abbots CC is putting the money into the square so they should be given exclusive use. It is certainly going to be an expensive project to take on.” After plenty of discussion, it was decided that the Manor House based club should be given user rights to the square for 10 years, with review at the end of the ninth year for a further 10 years. This will all depend on a few legal issues which need to be ironed out with the council’s legal team.
