Storm Causes Havoc

Fallen PineHigh winds caused havoc in Abbots last month as a number of trees in the area were brought down to earth, including the 130-year-old Scots Pine. In a week where the whole country was rocked by the speedy gales, a number of spots around Abbots were in danger of being damaged by the dangling trees. Breakspeare School lost a tree that nearly hit a classroom in the storms; while the Scots Pine was swaying dangerously close to the Manor House Sports & Social Club and a nearby children’s play area. So much so, that Abbots Langley Trees and Gardening Services had to be called in to help.

Jamie Hedger, 30, of Oak Green Way, was the man who came to the rescue after receiving a call from the Parish Council. Jamie has worked as a tree surgeon for 12 years and has been running his tree and gardening service for six of those. The usual day-to-day duties of the job can be anything from pruning apple trees to turfing and general tree care, but pulling down trees after a storm is not so common. The experienced tree surgeon was helped in bringing down the Scots Pine by Richard Deacon, who has worked for Abbots Langley Trees and Gardening Services for two years. Richard went to secure a fixing on the three so that it could be guided down and cut safely. Unbelievably, no sooner had they secured the rope and picked up the tension, the tree came down on its own accord. Jamie had planned to spend the week of the storms moving into his new house. Unfortunately for him though, most of his time was spent around the village. He told My Abbots: “I had planned for it to be a normal, quiet week as historically, it usually is. However, as a result of the storms, I had to cope with very long days and unpacking boxes.” Abbots Langley Parish Council have decided to make a bench from the fallen tree and have it placed in the Park for the people of the village to enjoy for many years to come.
