Two Injured Abbots Chip Shop Crash
Abbots Langley witnessed one of its most horrendous events of the entire year when staff and customers of a local chip shop were injured following a car losing control and smashing through the front window.
The shocking accident occurred at Dolphin Fish Bar on Langley Lane, when a 72-year-old driver lost control of his Volvo Estate and ploughed through the window of the shop, showering a member of staff with boiling hot oil and breaking the leg of a 24-year-old woman.
As a result, the woman was taking to nearby Hemel Hempstead Hospital, with the 29-year-old employee taken to a special burns unit in London to have his injuries treated. A handful of other customers, along with the driver, were treated at the scene of the accident, but their injuries were only minor. Yusuf Aykan, the employee who was showered with the hot oil like a tidal wave, is now recovering at home after suffering second degree burns, while the woman who broke her leg is also on the mend. Angie Carmichael, Landlady of The Swan, Pimlico, was in the chip shop when the car crashed through the window. She told My Abbots: “I was in the shop to grab some dinner with my husband Paul when we noticed a Blue Volvo sat on the kerb outside. “The driver returned a couple of minutes later and once in the driver’s seat, the car shot backwards and then forwards at high speed into our car.
“He hit a signpost and then crashed through the shop window. My husband managed to turn off the ignition and shouted to staff to turn off any electrics and gas. “One woman was screaming due to injuries suffered to her leg, while one of the staff was showered with boiling hot oil. Angie acted fast and called the police before running next door to the Abbots Tandoori to grab bottles of water to treat the staff member burnt by the oil until the paramedics arrived. Another witness to the accident was Energy Therapist and Healer, Helen Emms, of Hazelbury Avenue. Helen was in her car heading towards the chip shop to get her dinner, and saw the whole event take place from the outside. She told My Abbots: “I saw the car swerve across the road and hit a parked 4x4 before it accelerated into the fish bar. “At first I thought it was one of these grab and run events because the speed the car went through the window made it look deliberate. “It was quite strange to see something like that happen because you don’t see that sort of thing in Abbots Langley. “I phoned the police because there were a lot of people in the fish bar at the time, and I think the saving grace was the car hitting the 4x4, which alerted the people inside so they could get out of the side door.” Owner of the destroyed shop, Peri Cengiz, 36, from Bricket Wood, took over the Dolphin with her husband, Erhan, in 2001 when it was then known as the Red Herring. This is not the first disaster Peri has had to deal with, as 18 months ago residents may remember that the Dolphin suffered a rather large fire, which resulted in the shop being fully refurbished. Thankfully for them, they have managed to get over the latest disaster and the shop was open a lot quicker than many would have
expected.
