WATER SHORTAGE IN ABBOTS ? |
A recent meeting between parish councillors has revealed that the water infrastructure in Abbots Langley is inadequate to keep up with the growing population. It is reported that there is enough water to supply the current crop of people within the parish, but with the government expecting Abbots to supply more housing over the next 10 years, this could well be a problem.
It would appear that local water companies did not compensate for the village growth, and have now been left short. When under state control there was very little to gain for management in preparing for the future, but since privatisation, provisions should have been made. Utility companies have had to calculate returns on investment to produce profits while also trying to make up on a lack of investment in previous years. Some will find it unbelievable that there is inadequate supplies for the village of Abbots due to the high water pressure that some experience. Greenhouses and terraces have been damaged by the force of water, with some people having to install regulators. While there is a danger of water shortage, some residents suffer from too much water – which is where flooding occurs. In some areas the water drainage system is of a poor standard and we often see a lot of surface water. On the bank holiday weekend, many areas around Abbots saw large puddles on the road, especially at the junction of Popes Road and Gallows Hill Lane. The constant over flow of water when we get heavy rain is also damaging the roads with a number of pot holes having to be regularly filled. So what is the answer? Water is being wasted because of a poor drainage system, so it would appear that this needs to be sorted. Then the brains can get ticking over how this supposed shortage of water can be countered. Only time will tell whether this issue will be resolved.
