PEDESTRIAN CROSSING FINALLY ARRIVES |
Pupils, parents and teachers breathed a sigh of relief last month after the new pedestrian crossing on Hazelwood Lane was finally completed. The crossing has been in the pipeline for the last few years, but due to a number of issues, was delayed time and time again.
County Councillor Paul Goggins was one of the people who has been campaigning for the crossing after a number of minor accidents and incidents have occurred around the School Mead area. He was of course delighted that the crossing was finally finished last month. He told My Abbots: “I’m exceptionally pleased that this has all gone through, because it has gone on for months and years. The first request took years before anything happened and it’s been another six months between start and finish of the work. It’s a terrific improvement for parents and children.” While Councillor Goggins was pleased with the final outcome, he did admit he was disappointed to receive a complaint from a wheelchair user who found it hard to negotiate the crossing. He added: “I had a complaint from a wheelchair user, who found it hard to get around the pole on the School Mead side of the crossing. I’m a bit sad nothing was said earlier because it’s probably too late to do anything now.” Head Teacher of Tanners Wood School, Mike Lansdown, was naturally delighted with the addition of the crossing, which now makes it safer for children and adults to reach the school. He told My Abbots: “We are obviously delighted with the sighting of the new pedestrian crossing being so close. I’m sure it has made the journey safer for a large number of children and parents, allowing them to cross Hazelwood Lane at a point conveniently located midway between the school and the new shops. We are currently developing our school travel plan and welcome any measures which make it easier for children to come to school and return home safely.” The new crossing has come at a cost of around £25,000. Is this too much, or can we really put a price on safety?Your views to
